FESTIVAL OF LIGHT

One of the most prominent light festivals in China, Lumières Shanghai takes place in Xintiandi around Chinese New Year, with glowing creations from multiple artists on display.

HAPPY HOUR

Visit Xintiandi during happy hour (usually midweek between 4pm and 7pm) for heavily discounted drinks and food. Deals rotate and change regularly, but most spots within the Xintiandi complex offer them.

Xintiandi’s Best Restaurants

Xintiandi is a catch-all, mid- to high-end dining adventure, with dozens of restaurants to suit different palates. Here’s a list of the best.

Kanpai (（乾杯烧肉居酒屋, Gānbēi Shāoròu Jūjiǔwū), on No. 16, Lane 181, is the spot for tasty Japanese flavours. It’s an atmospheric izakaya (Japanese pub-eatery) inside a lane house dressed with exposed industrial pipes, bricks, Japanese pub posters and tables with BBQ grills.

Peninsula Boutique and Cafe (半岛精品店与咖啡厅, Bàndǎo Jīngpǐndiàn yǔ Kāfēitīng) is just next door and is the spot for classic afternoon tea – plus highly creative pastries. Incarnations include green tea quiche and XO sauce and custard raisin pie.

Boxing Cat Brewery (拳击猫啤酒屋, Quánjīmāo Píjiǔwū) is also nearby and comprises a solid spot in which to sink a craft pint and devour a plate of Southern American pub grub. Chili cheese fries are served in a cast-iron skillet, and slabs of fried cheese are stacked like Jenga blocks.

The Barn by Green & Safe sells produce (organic wine, pastries, veggies) and offers open-plan dining in a lofty barn-like space, where heaped salads and free-range meat dishes are served, with all the ingredients coming from the company’s own farm.

Polux by Paul Pairet, on No.5, is more of the classic French-bistro dining experience, with simple European-style furnishings, steak cooked to perfection, duck confit and pork chop Grenobloise.

Din Tai Fung (鼎泰丰, Dǐng Tài Fēng) on Lane 123 boasts some of the best examples of Shanghai’s famous xiǎolóngbāo dumplings. These soupy parcels are simply sublime, and reasonably priced for their setting. However, T’ang Court (唐阁, Táng Gé) is where you go to really impress a date. The two-Michelin-star dining experience is located on the 5th floor of The Langham hotel, which serves up truly superb suckling pig and dim sum to formally dressed patrons.
